Safe work is for life
October is National Safe Work Month, and this year’s theme is one we stand behind: Safe work is for life.
The idea is simple. Safety isn’t only about getting through today’s shift without an incident. It’s about protecting a worker’s health, their income and everything they do outside of work, for years to come.
At ARC Staff, we place workers into warehouses, logistics operations, events and grounds teams across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Adelaide. Every one of them should finish a shift the same way they started it. Home, healthy and ready for the next one.
Why it matters
According to Safe Work Australia, 188 workers in Australia were fatally injured at work in 2024. There were also 146,700 serious workers’ compensation claims in 2023–24 (preliminary figures). That’s more than 400 serious claims every day.
Behind every one of those numbers is a person, a family and a workplace. Safe Work Australia’s message is that each of them could have been prevented.
Four weeks, four focus areas
Safe Work Australia has split the month into four weekly themes. We’ll follow the same structure on our socials all month.
| Dates | Theme | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1–11 October | For life | Why work health and safety matters |
| 12–18 October | For health | What work health and safety protects |
| 19–25 October | For the future | The long-term impact of harm at work |
| 26–31 October | For all | Action across every workplace |
Six safety reminders for every shift
Whether you’re picking orders in a warehouse or bumping in an event, these are the basics that keep you safe now and for the long run.
1. Know your signs
Safety signs use colour for a reason. A blue circle means something is mandatory, like wearing hearing protection, a hard hat or safety boots. A red circle with a line through it means don’t. A yellow triangle is a warning about a hazard. A green sign shows emergency information, like exits and first aid. If you see blue, it’s not optional.
2. Protect your hearing
Noise damage builds up over time, and it doesn’t come back. If a sign, your supervisor or the noise level tells you to wear earplugs or earmuffs, wear them for the whole time you’re exposed. Not just for the loud bits.
3. Lift smart
Bend from the knees, not your back. Keep the load close to your body and avoid twisting. If it’s heavy or awkward, ask a workmate to buddy lift, or use the trolley, pallet jack or lifting aid on site. A back injury can follow you for years.
4. Watch the weather
Spring brings strong winds and storms, especially for outdoor event set-ups. UV is climbing too, and Brisbane and the Gold Coast are already heating up. Bring water, sunscreen and layers, and speak up if conditions become unsafe.
5. Fuel your shift
Eat something before an early start. Pack water and a proper feed for your break. Being hungry, tired or dehydrated slows your reactions and makes mistakes more likely.
6. Look after your head
October is also Mental Health Month in New South Wales and Victoria, and 10 October is World Mental Health Day. Mental health is part of safety too. If something at work, or outside it, is weighing on you, talk to someone you trust, your supervisor or your ARC consultant.
For businesses: safety starts before the first shift
When you bring in labour hire, you’re trusting someone else’s people on your site. That trust should come with confidence that they’ll work safely.
At ARC Staff, we supply pre-vetted, job-ready workers who arrive prepared, on time and ready to follow your site rules. We also handle payroll, super and WorkCover under one invoice, so there’s less for you to manage.
National Safe Work Month is also a good time to check in on your own site. Safe Work Australia suggests small steps, like talking with workers about a key risk, reviewing a procedure or refreshing your signage. One or two actions this month can make a lasting difference.
